  1. Thank you for Project 151! Working together we might do what government
alone hasn’t been able to do: affect meaningful change on this major roadway. The power of collective effort applied effectively and consistently is the moving force to get things done.
The Board of Supervisors has been working to make the roads in Nelson safer. We have requested, and VDOT has responded, in recent years by making improvements along 151 (and many other difficult roads). We had a major study of 151/6 done in 200l. We worked with VDOT to try to lower the speed limit in Nellysford and in Roseland and move some of the worst intersections up on the list of road improvements. This includes the intersections of 6 and Old Roberts Mountain Road; Spruce Creek and 151; Rodes Farm Drive and 151; and 151 and 6. We’ve tried to lower the speed limit on our section of 151 and investigated getting through trucks off the road. At our continued Board meeting yesterday, we requested that our County Administrator see what needs to be done to request a new study from the CTB, and will get this going. An accident history study is currently being compiled by the State Police. When we receive this study, we will have information needed to work with VDOT to make Rt. 151 safe.
The long-range goal of getting the through trucks off 151 is one I will work for, as it makes no good sense for them to be there. Let’s fight to prevent an accident involving big trucks before it happens.
There has been much discussion since the accident which took the lives of Laura Cavedo and her children. Several possible meetings have been considered. I am planning to work with Senator Creigh Deeds and others to hold a Town Meeting to gather citizen input. Since Project 151 will be holding a forum, I will wait to see if another meeting is needed. Other smaller meetings are being planned with transportation officials, public safety officers, possibly the trucking industry, local and state elected officials, and citizen representation. I will be there and will be sure that a spokesperson from Project 151 is there, as well.
Thanks to all of you who have called, written, emailed and talked with me. And please know my heart is heavy, but I am confident that working together, good things will happen and we will make Rt. 151 a safer road.

  2. Connie, thank you for your comment to us and thank you for committing to help remove through trucks from these two stretches of highway. We are glad to know you support our efforts and genuinely appreciate your help!

  3. Maybe Curry Roberts, President of the State Fair of Virginia, a private not for profit, was able to get a 17 million dollar road (driveway) on US Rt 30 in Caroline and Hanover, built with State Tax dollars from the maintenance budget for Richmond Fredericksburg VDOT budget. He definitly has the Governors ear and uses the Governors law firm Macandlish/ Holton.

The fair was approved in Spet. 05, the road was started in 06 and is now completed.

Now that’s what I call a mover and shaker. Maybe he will share his secret with the taxpayers?

I believe Curry lives in Albemarle and is involved with the Democratic committee there. Are you familiar with him Connie?

Here’s the calendar for lobbyist events.

I find this one especially interesting: Speaker Bill Howell’s 5th Annual Scotch Tasting and Cigar Night Evening

  5. […] if you live or work in Nelson County, you may have seen postcard announcements of Wednesday’s community meeting at the Rockfish Valley Community Center October 10 @ 7:30pm. If you cannot attend, please take the […]

  6. Unfortunately I will be out of town the day of next week’s community meeting on this issue. I attempted to fill out the survey card, but have had a hard time because the waxy finish prohibits the ink from adhering. Therefore, I am including my responses in this post.

    1. All tractor trailer trucks (other than local deliveries) should be banned from Rts. 151 and 6. There is simply no reason why truckers should be permitted to use this shortcut only to save a few measly miles. How many more people have to lose their lives on Rt. 151 before our legislators finally wake up and do the right thing??????

    2. Recommended safety improvements. All of these suggestions are pointless. The most expeditious way to increase road safety is to simply ban truck traffic. Frequently I have been driving on Rt. 151 only to be passed by a tractor trailer traveling at 70 plus miles per hour!!! I certainly was not traveling at a slow pace since I was driving the speed limit of 55 miles per hour.

    3. Close call. Yes, I have had two close calls in the past week — once from the tractor trailer noted above and just yesterday from an apparent drunk driver who weaved back and forth over the yellow line.

  7. The number one way to greatly improve the safety on Route #151 is to have ongoing enforcement of existing traffic laws.
7 persons killed in less than one year should get
the attention of our community citizens and local leaders.
Large truck need to be ban from using this Route
#6 and 151 as a cut through…expect for local deliveries.
Lets pull together to see restore the safety of
    our local roads!!

  8. I love to shop in Waynesboro. Monday We actually stopped on rt6 and 29 to say a prayer before traveling on. This stretch puts fear in the average driver. We are not talking about fender benders folks. My biggest fear is coming up behind someone waiting to turn left. I’m not worried about me not stopping; its the truck behind me.

  9. I won’t be able to attend tonight and haven’t seen a postcard so will make my comments here.

    1. I agree that turn lanes are desperately needed and would like to see the turn onto 635 West also included on the list of problems. Folks coming south on 151 from Greenfield do not want to slow down for the increased traffic (due to Recycle Center and RVCC/Ruritan activities) turning onto and off of Rockfish School Lane.

    2. If we are going to ask drivers to slow down on 151, I would like to see a strong yard sign program explaining to visitors on our road why we are all going slowly. We don’t want to encourage road rage about the “locals” driving 45, or crazy passing with questionable space/time allowances. But repeated signs suggesting we have organized an effort to slow traffic might garner respect for and voluntary adherence to our request.

    3. I drive 151 and 6 every day to and from work. Better enforcement of speeds would be most helpful. It’s amazing how big a hurry people can be in … on beautiful highways!

Thanks for all you are doing.

  10. I just returned from the meeting. I am sorry that I couldn’t stay to the end. It was very interesting to listen to all the suggestions and ideas.

If I had stayed to speak I would have said this:
I support the lowering of speed limits. I think 45 is a good speed to drive, I drove that on my way home tonight. I also think that the speed should be dropped to 35 in certain areas. I live on 151 between the Rockfish Fire House and Mrs. Andersons Grocery. Why is it that we have a speed of 55 in front of the Fire House? Other Rescue stations that I have driven past have reduced speed within so many feet of their entrance. I also think it should be 35 in front of the Rockfish Elementary school all the way past Afton Family Medicine thru the curves and at all the major intersections.

Here is a statistic for everyone to think about.
On my way home from work tonight I counted 55 (give or take a few) driveways, roads or other types of entrances onto 151 from just from AMFOG to Patrick’s Store. That is alot of entrances and chances for an accident to happen.

I am really interested in the idea put forth to have our 151 made into a scenic by-way. I was not clear though if that would eliminate the thru truck traffic? Maybe someone can clarify that for me.

I am terrified to pull in and out of my driveway. Over the past 12 years of living here I have had to learn tactics of entering and exiting my driveway onto 151 to just make sure my family and I stay alive!!

It’s not just the trucks, it’s all the people rushing around in a hurry and all the ski traffic, and let me tell you, the ski traffic is just as bad as the trucks. Going to fast, passing illegally, riding your rear end. They can be some real impatient people.
I have actually passed by my driveway when I wanted to turn into it and went on down to the BP station to use the safer turn lane to get out of the way because someone was ridding my rear end and way to close for comfort. I will get out of the way and then turn back and try again.

Well that is my story. If someone would claify the scenic by-way option, I would appreciate it.

We need bumber stickers of what one person said “Stay Alive – Drive 45”. Maybe I will put a sign in my yard!

Thank you Project 151. Together we can make a difference.
